An Urban Development Strategy has been presented on the website of Zaporizhia Сity Сouncil. It was developed with the support from Partnership for Local Economic Development and Democratic Governance Project (PLEDDG), which is implemented by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and financed by Canadian government.

The mission of Zaporizhia has been defined as following:

“Zaporizhia is a treasurer of historical memory, the sacral center of Ukraine, the cradle of Ukrainian nation, a spiritual center of Slavic civilization, national fortitude, a Khortytsia doorway between the past and the future, a dynamic and young city of steel power and energy”.

The document includes strategic areas of city development such as the enhancement of environment and cost-effective use of resources, promotion of entrepreneurship and creative economy, urban planning and raising of living standards.

Environmental improvement will be achieved through:

  •  Completing the construction of a solid waste landfill;
  • Constructing a waste treatment facility;
  • Reutilizing trapped dust of gas purification as raw material in production;
  • Reconstructing central sewage treatment facilities;
  • Developing a network of public electronic transport;
  • Preservation and energy efficiency.

Promotion of entrepreneurship:

  • Replacement of the old equipment and introduction of environmentally friendly technologies in environment-polluting facilities;
  •  Establishing modern centers of administrative services;
  • Creating the environment conductive to promotion and support of local manufacturers by developing international economic ties;
  • Celebrating the Day of Zaporizhia in other countries’ embassies;
  • Network of youth co-working centers;
  • Zaporizhia Business School (hosted by universities and colleges);
  • Supporting the organization of festivals and folk crafts fairs;
  • Developing a database of scientific proposals;
  • Lobbying the development of logistic capabilities directly between the cities of Dnipro – Zaporizhia – Kryvyj Rih;
  • Tourism development.

Urban development:

  • Developing the infrastructure of the public utility company “Zaporizhia International Airport”;
  • Developing the network of highways, redistribution of traffic flows;
  • Developing a modern system of public parking;
  • Developing the cycling infrastructure;
  • Preserving historical buildings in city downtown;
  • Converting railway stations, high education institutions, parks, public recreational places and public transport into information access zones by offering free access to Wi-Fi and charging stations for electronic gadgets;
  • Creating a new image for the city.

Good quality of life:

  • Supporting scientific incubators;
  • Extending the list of institutions where students can do internships, creating a registry of such institutions;
  • Developing the vocational counseling system for young individuals, taking into account the needs of tourism and power resource management;
  • Building a system of preventive health care;
  • Developing the social service system.
