On July 27-28, 2017, in Kyiv, PLEDDG Project delivered training on “Trustworthy and Reputable Journalism: new and conventional media technologies and local government reporting” for journalists from PLEDDG partner cities.

This is the first training by PLEDDG that deals with media. In view of new challenges Ukraine is facing now and constant changes in the Ukrainian media sphere, it is important to map the most effective means of covering the activity of local governments and elected officials across Ukraine.

During the two-day training, participants were taught how to communicate with representatives of local government and build a reputation for being an effective journalist, applying both conventional and new means of press coverage with the use of various information technologies and platforms.

Practical workshops dedicated to journalism ethics while working with local government and the use of new media technologies to build a professional reputation were delivered by Michael Bociurkiw, Canadian journalist and media commentator of Ukrainian descent, and Ukrainian experts from Sigma Digital and VoxUkraine.

Participants discussed the notion of journalism ethics, including journalism ethics according to the Canadian Association of Journalists and International Organizations. Olena Shkarpova presented factcheck cases from Vox Ukraine with a focus on economic and political topics, while Svitatoslav Yurash spoke about the role of social media on political developments at the national and local level. Yurii Blotskyy, director of Sigma Digital, shared some secrets as to building a professional reputation and audience engagement with the help of social media and new media platforms.

The training was moderated by Andrii Suslenko, PLEDDG consultant and journalist.
