The fourth industrial revolution, climate change and, as a result, transformation of consumption culture create new challenges for the world economies. Global trends are forcing enterprises to keep up with the times, or reformat the process of production. At the same time, there are industries, which in the nearest future will become a thing of the past.

At the local level, the shutdown of even one of such enterprises might result in under-fulfillment of local budget indicators and loss of workplaces. This can be prevented by encouraging investors to develop prospective sectors of the economy in the regions.

Such enterprises already exist in Ukraine. Thus, in Zhmerynka, a former fur factory was converted into a shrimp farm where Pacific king prawns are grown.

In terms of production capacity, the farm is one of the leaders in Europe. Every month the factory produces about 4 tons of shrimps for the Ukrainian consumers and plans to increase the figure to 80 tons per year and enter the European market. Currently the owners are focused on the certification of their products in order to be able to export them. In addition, the company is completely switching to the use of solar energy and installing solar panels, also making their business safe for the environment.

This initiative facilitates the development of export activities, as envisaged by the 2017-2021 Zhmerynka promotion program for local products in the external markets, which was developed with the support of PLEDDG.

The shrimp farm is not the only example of eco business in Zhmerynka. Snail farm, which is already trying to export its products through the Association of Snail Breeders of Ukraine, is also actively developing its facilities.
